Des "Paroles d'Afrique" dans un musée : de la valorisation à la transmission

International audienceSince the pioneering work of Geneviève Calame-Griaule, “language” in all its forms has become an object of study in itself for anthropologists, specifically for ethnolinguists. With a focus on enhancing the impact of our own research, this paper describes the experience of mounting an exhibition at the Musée d’Ethnographie de Bordeaux on the theme Voices of Africa. The aim of this exhibition was to investigate the social, cultural and political aspects of language–oral and written–on the African continent. But how is it possible to display the intangible in a museum exhibition? It poses a real challenge because it requires us to find ways not only of exhibiting language itself, but also of making visitors feel its impact by associating sound, imagery and objects. How could we share with the public our concerns about the various and complex ways that contemporary African societies have of understanding, organizing, preserving and enhancing language, that most intangible of all aspects of cultural heritage?Depuis les travaux pionniers de Geneviève Calame-Griaule, la parole dans toutes ses modalités est devenue un objet d’étude en soi pour les ethnologues, et plus précisément pour les ethnolinguistes. Une exposition consacrée aux « Paroles d’Afrique » a été présentée au musée d’Ethnographie de Bordeaux, avec pour objectif de questionner les dimensions sociales, culturelles et politiques de la parole – orale comme écrite – sur le continent africain. Il s’agissait d’un véritable défi muséographique, car le propos n’était pas seulement de faire connaître ces paroles, mais aussi d’en faire ressentir les effets aux visiteurspar le son, l’image et des objets. Nous montrerons dans cet article comment nous avons cherché à partager avec le public nos questionnementssur les manières diverses et complexes qu’ont les sociétés africainesactuelles d’appréhender, d’organiser, de conserver et de mettre en valeur cet immatériel par excellence qu’est la parole
